Your Body's 5 Health Defence Systems

Other than your immune system, your body has other health defence systems. Here are the 5 defence systems that keep your body in good shape, healing and repairing whatever has been damaged in your body.

  1. Angiogenesis. It is the process by which blood vessels are formed and maintained. Blood vessels bring oxygen and nutrients to all of our cells and organs.
  2. Regeneration. Stem cells maintain, repair, and regenerate our body's tissues and organs.
  3. Microbiome. The more than 40 trillion bacteria that live in our bodies are soldiers that defend our health.
  4. DNA Protection. Our DNA is our bodies's genetic blueprint but it also has repair mechanisms.
  5. Immunity. Our immune system is our bodies's saviour.

We are all familiar with our body's systems that keep us healthy: nervous system, endocrine system, respiratory system, digestive system, renal system and musculoskeletal system. However, there are other health and defense mechanisms that our body is capable of healing itself and protect us from diseases. Some of these health and defense mechanisms, aside from those mentioned earlier, are:

  • Apoptasis. Prevents the accumulation of damaged cells.
  • Inflammation. A natural response to injury and infection that removes damaged tissues and fights infection.
  • Hormonal regulation. Regulates bodily functions such as metabolism, growth and reproduction
  • Lymphatic system. Removes wastes and excess fluids.
  • Heat shock response. Cells respond to stress such as high temperatures and toxins.
  • Autophagy. Cells break down and recycle their own components, removing damaged proteins and other cellular components
