What is Glutathione?

Glutathione (GSH) is an anti-oxidant. It is a nutrient. An anti-oxidant protects cells from toxins. GSH also inhibits the synthesis of melanin. According to research, glutathione is not well absorbed across the gastro-intestinal tract if taken orally.

Think more of Glutathione as an anti-oxidant rather than as a skin whitener. "Because glutathione exists within the cells, it is in a prime position to neutralize free radicals. It also has potentially widespread health benefits because it can be found in all types of cells, including the cells of the immune system, whose job is to fight disease." MedicineNet.

Glutathione vs L-Glutathione

Glutathione is made by the body from the 3 amino acids l-cysteine, l-glutamic acid, and glycine. Maybe that's why it's referred to as L-Glutathione. Perhaps, if there is glutathione that doesn't come from these amino acids, it cannot be referred to as l-glutathione. But I'm not sure about that. If you have information about this, I would appreciate your comment.

Other popular anti-oxidants are Vitamins C and E.
